Upcoming 2023 Design Trends

Updated: Sep 25

This year our team had the opportunity to visit High Point Furniture Market to see the newest collections from all our favorite brands and explore new vendors. Not only did we get to see some amazing pieces and sit on all the upholstered goods we laid eyes on, we were able to get a feel for trends you'll be seeing in 2023. #TrendingTuesday is a segment on our instagram page that you can check out for a deep dive on each (we'll make sure to save them in our Highlights if you miss it).

But for now, here is a preview of what those deep dive trends will be touching on and some of the images we took while at High Point.

COLOR PALETTE

The upcoming trend in colors are going to be warmer in nature and actually trend more towards the brown spectrum. Grays are not gone but they are more on the warmer side and pair better with brown, ivory and greens. Heavy textures as well!

WOOD TONES

Natural wood tones were everywhere! The biggest color you saw at market this year was natural white oak. This color blends the grays and browns together lovely and allows minimal graining to come through. Heavy grain in woods are still a no.

MENSWEAR FABRICS

An underlying trend that may or may not pick up is menswear fabrics. This is something that you'd see in a traditional mens suit like stripes, houndstooth or smaller geometric patterns. I like this style of pattern better than the larger prints back 5 - 10 years ago but I don't see this trend as sticking around as long as the other trends. Something to keep an eye on!

CURVED FURNITURE

Curved furniture was huge this year. This photo above is an exaggerated curved piece (and very comfortable actually!) but curved pieces were in sofas, ottomans, chairs, tables... you name it, it was there. I like that curved has taken ahold of the market because there is a time and place for these curved pieces. If you're floating your furniture in a space for example, it would be nice to see a curved sofa back versus a boring flat piece. Something to add a little interest. It's all in the details...

CHUNKY BED FRAMES

YES! This trend was from all brands, high end to the more cost effective brands and I am here for it. Bedrooms now are being built so large that slim bed frames seem to be under-scaled for the space. This trend allows the bed to be once again, the focal point in the room and create more depth. Some of the beds in this trend had a footboard large enough to be a bench! Two in one!

That was a quick snippet of the upcoming trends of 2023. Are all of the trends we saw here to stay? No. Not at all. But for the majority of the ones above, they are going to be a staple in design for the next few years. For example, boucle fabric (looks like soft sheep fur) has been around for about 2 years now and there was still a heavy presence of boucle in most showrooms. That being said, we've curated a style here at Smith Interior Design that doesn't rely on the newest trends that we consider "fads". When designing a home, adding a 'fad trend' here or there is fine but to design an entire home on the trend of the year is hard. Why spend all that money when in two years, your home looks dated and you're bored of it. We like to design your home to be classic and last 10 - 20 years with only updating smaller pieces to make you happy (I myself love to get new pillows for the sofa every year). That's what we love to do and I'll show you how :)
